TIME TO SHARE

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve all enjoyed a super sunny day. My day started off foggy but the sun burnt the fog off and by morning coffee time we were enjoying beautiful sunshine for the fourth day running.

Helen posted a comment yesterday asking how I make my labels. So, I decided to share with you how I make my simple labels. Of course, we all know that we can purchase pre-printed quilt labels but I simply use scraps of fabric which I write on. I tend to stick to light colour fabric with a quiet print. And as I do not consider my writing to be very neat and also because I’m afraid to spell something wrong, I compose the words for my label, centre them on a page and print them out using laptop and printer …..

Then using a light box or sunny window I trace the words onto fabric. Using light fabric helps in the whole process. I use a Micron pen which I heat set once the tracing is done.

Once the heat setting is done I press a little hem all the way around the label …..

I pin the label to the back of the quilt …..

And using matching thread I attach the label using a small running stitch making sure that I do not sew thru all the layers thru to the front making sure that the label is secure.

There are many ways to make quilt labels. I keep my labels simple. If you own and operate an embroidery machine you can use it to make your labels. In fact, you can make your labels as simple as mine or as ornate as you wish but do, please do label your quilts.

I’ve read about the dreadful weather in Québec which of course is in Canada. To my Canadian readers who are experiencing life in the flood waters, please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your families. I hope things have started improving.

The lovely sunshine is making my heart sing. The top of my latest To-Do List is: learn to dance like no one is watching; learn to sing like no one is listening. I think it’s time to start living with all my heart. The past year has been a very quiet one in my little world. Now that spring is here I’m going to start partying. After all, we only get one life, so let’s spend it living well.

BUSY PRODUCTIVE SUNDAY

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve all been enjoying a fab weekend. It’s been a typical spring weekend here in my little world. The sun has been sparse but that didn’t deter me from getting on with things that needed doing.

You might remember that I cut and pieced some strips to be turned into a Bargello type quilt top recently.

Well yesterday after running a couple of errands I disappeared into my sewing room and got the job started. After cutting loads of strip sets I flashed up my sewing machine and sewed to my hearts’ content. I sewed and pressed and sew and pressed until I was 3/4 of the way thru the job. I resumed the work this morning and this is what I ended up with …..

This ended up a larger quilt top than I thought it would. A nice generous single bed size quilt. And the best part is that I purchased nothing for it. Every scrap of fabric comes from my stash! I didn’t think that would be possible. I’ve even found something to use for the backing. I’m really pleased with the progress of this quilt and the result so far. I hope to get it longarm quilted sometime this week in between appointments and chores.

It’s been a rather productive weekend in my little world. My Sarah is busy finishing up her end of year assignments. Despite all the upheaval running in the background of our lives, Sarah has managed to hit all her targets and deadlines. I am so very proud of her. She’s so talented and uses everything she has at her disposal to produce original pieces. Thru all the rubbish going on I did my best to set the very best example I could. I’ve taught Sarah to be strong, to stand up for herself and to never let anyone but herself be in charge of her happiness. We’ve put quite a lot of effort into rebuilding our new lives and somehow, we’re getting there. It’s a quiet satisfying life with no chaos now.

While I was working in my sewing room yesterday and today I had a little company. My Maisie, when she’s not snoring, oversees my work and inspects for quality control …..

Maisie was a little off colour last week. Enough so that I was getting a little worried when she went off her food. Maisie never goes off her food! Rest assured she’s taking interest in food and eating well again after her three fast. She’s due for a haircut this week.

I received a few lovely comments about my last post. It seems that somehow, I managed to inspire one or two quilt makers/crafters to progress on their ongoing projects. You may not realise it but it’s positive comments like these that spur me on to make progress on my own projects. So, while you’re thinking that I’m helping you move forward, you’re helping me too. So, keep the positive comments coming and I may just be able to finish a few more of my UFOs by summer’s end. Thank you for inspiring me.

CHALLENGE WEEKEND

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve all had an enjoyable weekend. Here in the UK we are enjoying a bank holiday weekend. Tomorrow is the holiday. I’m hoping the sun shines as brightly tomorrow as it has today.

While the sun was shining brightly this morning I decided to do a couple of little jobs outside. I bought a few sacks of pea gravel that I wanted to spread around my gravel garden. It’s a job I dreaded but knew wouldn’t take more than a few minutes. The gravel garden looks fab again. Those few minutes spent tidying in the gravel garden has spurred me on to purchasing my annual plants this coming week. We’ve had a couple of mornings where we had frost last week. I’m hoping that the possibility of frost has past now so I can pretty up my garden.

I have a wee bit of sewing progress to show you today. I make quite a lot of lists in order to keep my life straight. So, I’ve always got a notebook/diary type thing which I consider my bible. As I have four weeks left in the current notebook I decided to set up the next one. So, I started the process by making a cover for said book …..

As you can see I kept it simple and straight forward. I used a few bits of brightly patterned/coloured fabric which I cut into strips and joined together and did some easy quilting. I kept it simple because that way I know I can cope with starting and finishing in one session.

Last weekend I started a project that I have been putting off for a few weeks. I always struggle choosing colours and prints for my projects. And as I was determined to use only what was in my stash I struggled even more. I finally settled on these fabrics which I will turn into a Bargello style quilt. It looks nothing at the moment but I think when it’s done it will look reasonably good. I was hoping to make progress on this project this weekend but something came up and I set the project aside until next weekend.

I got a message from my creative friend on Friday evening asking me if I could produce a quilt quickly for a poorly person who suffered a stroke a few days ago. Well I have been asked to step up to the plate a few times to produce quilts to give poorly people comfort in a time of need. I must admit that I wasn’t sure if I could do it. I got a brief which included using red and grey fabric and fleece backing. I wasn’t even sure that I would have enough of those colours to piece an entire quilt top. Well guess what???? I found sufficient of those colours to be able to piece a generous single size quilt including borders. The only thing missing was the fleece for backing. However, I knew exactly where to get that easily enough. I pulled the fabric and made a plan of action on Friday evening. And after stepping out to purchase red fleece I starting sewing the strips that I started cutting at 5am Saturday morning. By 5pm Saturday evening I had pieced the quilt top and loaded it into my longarm for quilting this morning. As I sit here this evening, Sunday evening, I have quilted and bound said quilt and it’s ready to handover on Wednesday. Here are a few photos of the quilt in question.

Although I wasn’t sure I could meet the challenge when I received the message on Friday evening, I felt it was important to get the job done. Someone needed the comfort a quilt brings. Once I determined I had enough fabric in my stash to do it I decided that this project would be a great way to pay forward  the kindness I received over the past year since my divorce proceedings started. I’m so grateful for all the support and encouragement I received that piecing this quilt was a small price and a great way to pay all that kindness forward. One good turn  always deserves another.

So, it’s been a rather busy but very productive weekend for me. I consider that I created something worthwhile. Longarm quilting using fleece as backing fabric is quite new to me. So, having another go gave me more experience and was a good learning curve. I have decided that while I didn’t use wadding in between the layers I did add a piece of calico to stabilise everything. I’m quite pleased with the result but most of all I am relieved that I managed to piece and quilt this project within 48 hours of receiving the request. I think I deserve a large refreshing Gin & Tonic this evening as a celebration of my accomplishment.

LONG OVERDUE CATCH UP

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’re all enjoying the arrival of spring. My little corner of the northeast of England received a generous dollop of sunshine recently. The sunshine has brought the Daffodils and Crocuses. The grass is finally growing and everyone seems to be in a relaxed state of mind. Spring really is here.

I have been busy working on UFOs and Quilts for Comfort projects. I’ve spent time making a plan to simplify life and slowly but surely implementing the changes. There are lots of ongoing lists. One of my lists is planning our summer holiday. I can see our brand new shiny life peeking out a little bit and starting to take shape.

I machine quilted a few quilt tops for Quilts for Comfort. These tops are donated by wonderful volunteers. And as I have the equipment I volunteer to finish them off by quilting and binding them. So far, I have finished five quilts which is exactly what I was hoping for.

I did a little more work on my Patchwork of the Crosses as well …..

It’s a project that I don’t work on too often but it’s the one I turn to when I can’t decide what else to work on. English Paper Piecing is the perfect armchair project. I do the prep cutting during the day and sit quietly in the evening wrapping the fabric patches around the card templates. The repetitive process is very soothing. And accompanied by a good old English murder mystery on TV, I can’t think of anything I would rather do of an evening.

I have spent some more time sorting and tidying and came across this little collection of felt. I have been thinking about what I can do with this little pile of felt which I have collected over the last few years. Every time I went to a craft show, I bought a little bundle of something soft and inviting. Now I am on track to make something different using a little of this collection. This is my chance to have a little play with a different medium. I have been wanting to learn a few new techniques. So, watch this space.

I have received a few messages of concern recently because I haven’t posted in a while. Rest assured that Sarah and I are perfectly fine. Life’s little challenges have sort of taken over life. We have been busy quietly coping with the challenges presented as they come along. The garden needs a little attention and I have been planning the work to be done inside my home as well. There’s a collection of paint charts and different colour paint has been applied to small patches of wall just to audition different colours. It’s definitely time for a change as we move on from our old life. If I’m honest, it’s quite an exciting time.

Now that spring is here, I’m finding inspiration everywhere. The fresh spring greens are luscious and the deep yellow of the daffodils are so appealing. We’ll soon see the Bluebells blooming. I think I should head over to the beach for a relaxing walk on the sand while the waves roll in. Spring is a brilliant time of year. It’s been another challenging but interesting winter but we seem to have survived once again. I received this little gift last week …..

THE DAY AFTER STORM DORIS

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve all had a great day. It’s been a lovely bright day in my little corner of the northeast of England. I enjoyed the sunshine which has given me a chance to get out after Storm Doris to sweep up and collect all the rubbish that was blown into my front garden over the last twenty-four hours. Storm Doris huffed and puffed and blew lots of water in but I survived to tell the tale. I will definitely have to have some building work done when spring arrives.

Once my outdoor chores were done I decided to do a little rotary cutting …..

I’m quite excited about working on this little project that I started drawing last autumn. Now that the blocks are coming to life the project feels more real.

This bright cheerful plant is a sign of what’s to come. Spring really is around the corner. Even the sweet song of the birds is giving me hope that spring is well and truly on the way.

It’s been a good week in my little world. The best part was attending my Quits for Comfort volunteer day on Wednesday. I always feel better knowing that I’m doing something useful. And I consider helping others very useful.

OVERDUE UPDATE

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve all be keeping busy and are well on your way to be ready for Christmas. I’ve been getting plenty done and I’m almost there. I have been concentrating on nothing but Christmas for weeks. I’m getting really excited about it.

I’ve done very little sewing lately. I have fallen in love with knitting socks. I’ve lost count of how many pairs I have knitted but it’s quite a few more than I thought I could ever knit. My lovely friend Lynne has taken me under her wing and pointed me in the right direction as to where to purchase nice sock wool. And she has introduced me to carbon fibre double pointed needles. I think these new-to-me needles are the bee’s knees and the cat’s meow all wrapped in one. They feel comfortable to work with because they don’t feel cold like metal ones. And the metal tips stay sharp unlike bamboo needles. So, if you haven’t tried these carbon fibre double pointed needles, I can confirm that they work for me.

Once again, as in previous years I am doing a low-key Christmas. I have put just a few decorations up, a few twinkling fairy lights, a tiny Christmas tree, a bit of tinsel garland, a wreath or two and I’ll be making paper chains to give it all a vintage look. I like vintage. And I love candles; candles add warmth and atmosphere to any room.

As 2016 draws to a close, I ponder the past year. Most of you who have been reading my blog posts for a while will know that my family life has changed somewhat since the turn of the year. I am now a single parent waiting for all the legalities to be sorted out. When all this kicked off just after the turn of the year I thought it was the end of the world as I knew it. I have since lived and learned that life doesn’t end when your husband decides he doesn’t want you anymore. In fact, I have learned that life has so much more to offer than I ever realised. I lived a very sheltered and isolated life for decades. During the months since separating from my husband I have experienced things I could never imagine existed. I’ve had good days and bad days from which I bounced back stronger and wiser. I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. My brand new shiny life is waiting for me whenever I’m ready to get started. 2017 doesn’t seem to be such a scary place to be going  to anymore.

I mentioned earlier that I haven’t done much sewing lately. Well here’s a little peek at the latest project I started …..

As you know I love appliqué work and earlier this autumn I went to a Quilts for Comfort volunteer meeting where my friend Sandra taught a fab session of quirky raw edge appliqué. This flower design is her creation which I resized smaller and added to my current project. Inspiration comes from so many different places but none more often than directly from creative friends. So, thank you Sandra for inspiring me to push on with this little project. I love this flower and I so wanted to add it to something. I have other ideas of how to use this beautiful little flower on other projects. I hope to come back in the new year with photos of this current finished piece.

I have received several messages from concerned readers in the last few days. So today I thought it was important that I post something to reassure you that Sarah and I are fine and we’re both really looking forward to Christmas. Life can be a scary place sometimes but I have grown as a person over the months and realised that the most important part of life is family, reasonable health and finding joy wherever possible. The past is in the past and dwelling on it doesn’t do anybody any good. It’s time to move forward and enjoy life to the best of our ability. 2017 will put us all on the right path again. I wanted to thank everyone who has been thinking about Sarah and I. Your good wishes and kind thoughts have been greatly appreciated. And should I be silent for too long again, please feel free to contact me and I’ll be happy to email you with news.

ALWAYS LOOKING FOR JOY

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve all had a super day. Can you feel autumn setting in. While walking my Maisie girl dog this morning I could feel it in the air. The temperature on the thermometer showed 13C which is not cold at all but the autumn breeze was making it feel cool. And the best part was that I found a little pile of leaves that I could crunch thru! Have you noticed that the supermarkets have pumpkins now? I love pumpkin season.

In a recent email, someone said that they missed my chatty posts. Well I am sorry if I have been a little hit and miss when it comes to posting lately. Most of you will know that there are things brewing in the background of my life that need my attention. So I am concentrating my efforts dealing with family problems but rest assured that there is plenty of other interesting stuff brewing in the background. Once again I have been given the opportunity to re-invent myself. I have received proposals from different organisations which has given me ideas on what I might like to do next. I will of course carry on with my volunteer work. And I hope to go a little further helping ladies who suffer from domestic, violent and emotional abuse. Due to my recent circumstances I see life thru different eyes and helping others come thru difficult times is close to my heart. You can all rest assured that I will still be the happiest Lucie the Happy Quilter there ever was simply because that is my nature.

I would love to report that I have been doing loads of sewing. Well I have regularly hand sewn stuff which doesn’t grow very quickly. It’s funny how things change ….. five years ago I did not enjoy hand sewing because it took too long to see any progress. Machine quilting was my favourite but I have been concentrating on hand quilting and piecing of late. It’s a lovely quiet and soothing process that I have discovered brings me comfort in difficult moments. It focuses my mind and gives me the opportunity to come up with solutions to current problems. And while I sit hand sewing, inspirational ideas pop into my head. I try to always have a notebook close to hand to record such ideas, otherwise I will forget them. Who knows I could possibly come up with the next trend!

It seems my post today has become somewhat chatty without even showing you any progress. Well I thought I would do things a little different this time, instead of showing you progress I will show you a couple of projects I would like to progress on. The first is my knitted pullover which I started in the last couple of weeks. It’s time to add some colour pattern in the yoke area …..

As there will be a lot of counting and colour changes I need to be able to concentrate so I have decided that Sunday afternoon will be perfect time for that task.

The next project I would like to move forward on is my Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses. I pressed some fabrics this afternoon in readiness for tracing and cutting more elongated hexagon shapes …..

This is one project that I enjoy working on. Every stage is soothing, right from choosing fabric, cutting shapes and sewing them over the papers right thru to pressing the fully assembled block. English Paper Piecing is the best.

The last project that I wish to work on over the next few weeks comes from this book. I haven’t chosen fabric but I do have one or two of the supplies listed on the requirements list. Quilt Country is a relatively new magazine which is packed full of quirky projects that are my kind of style. The magazine is published quarterly and it’s in French. I can’t wait to show you what I’m going to make. Hee hee hee

So those are the projects that I plan on concentrating on during the month of October. As well as those there’s always plenty of other things running in the background. My garden is very windswept at the moment but I stepped out for an hour to do a little pruning and bagging while the sun was shining. Sweeping was almost impossible but I did manage to pick up as many clippings as I could. What I didn’t collect will be blown into someone else’s garden. Ha ha ha

I have read in a couple different places that we’re supposed to have a hard winter. I have noticed that the tree across the road from me is laden with berries which is supposed to be a sign of a hard winter. I’m sure I heard this same rumour about having a hard winter this time last year and it didn’t happen. So we will just have to wait and see how the winter unfurls.

A couple of weeks ago I was feeling sorry for myself because I suddenly realised that I was a single parent now. Well it turns out that being a single parent is a lot more interesting than I expected. A gentleman came to my door this morning to deliver these beautiful blooms …..

I suddenly realised that in the last six months I have received more lovely blooms than I did in the 2+ decades that I have lived in the UK!!! I must have been a good person in my younger years to be receiving lovely flowers like these. I am grateful for all that I have and I choose to concentrate of finding joy in all good things.

It’s been a pretty good in my little world. I spent a little time in my sewing pressing fabric ready for cutting up. I worked out what we should have for our evening meal. Yum yum. I tidied up my garden which looks a hundred times better now. And basically my day went without a hitch which is rather unusual.

GIVEAWAY REMINDER

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve all had a great day. I’ve had a full day of running errands followed by coffee with my lovely friend. It’s amazing how my ladies are coming forward in support of my current family situation. It warms my heart to know how many people care. Someday I hope to pay it forward by helping others thru difficult times.

I have received many questions about my Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses project. So far I have only pieced two blocks which I posted a photo of yesterday …..

You may have noticed that both blocks are the same layout except that I have changed the placement of the light, medium and dark patches in different places giving each block a unique look. I have seen this Patchwork of the Crosses design made up once or twice before over the years and didn’t realise what it was all about until I saw someone working on it recently and she had a small stack of finished blocks. And that’s when I realised that it was hexagons, albeit elongated hexagons which of course are my favourite. It’s a long term project that will definitely get me thru the winter and beyond.

ENTERTAINING LUCY BOSTON AND MR. POLDARK

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve all had a fabulous weekend. My weekend was busy mooching around the neighbourhood. I worked on UFOs, I packed some boxes for long term storage and took a trip to our local tip to get rid of well-worn household stuff and garden rubbish. It seems everyone decided to visit the tip at the same time!!!

The favourite part of my weekend was a real treat for me. As you know I have concentrated mainly on working on UFOs since the turn of the year but this week I decided to kick off one of two winter projects. I spent a little bit of time choosing fabric for my Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses quilt. Once I had chosen the fabric I decided that it didn’t look right against the background fabric that I have already chosen and had my heart sent on. So it was back to the drawing board. My background fabric is a lovely light grey print. So I have finally decided on a colour scheme that includes pink, corals, reds, blues and teals. This project will be a good way of using up my stash. So here’s little peek at the first block in progress.

I’m using the English Paper Piecing method to piece this quilt top. And although these are elongated hexagons they are still hexagons. And hexagons are my absolute favourite. So it’s such a treat for me to have started working on this project sooner than winter.

So that’s my weekend report. I have been enjoying the end of the summer. I thought by now the temperature would be dipping at night but it’s not happening yet. In fact, the weather girl was saying just this morning, that the temperature might hit 30°C down south today! We rarely get such hot weather in my little corner of the northeast of England. Isn’t it too early to have an Indian summer?

FRIDAY CATCHUP

Hello my lovelies. I’m sure most of you think I’ve disappeared off the edge of the earth. Well I assure you that haven’t; I have been enjoying the last little bit of summer in private.

While the kids were going back to school this past week I have been getting myself ready for some new learning of my own. I decided that I needed to learn a few new skills. So I’ll be hitting the back-to-school supplies section of a different kind pretty soon in readiness for my learning sessions. I’ll tell you more about it when the new learning starts.

I spent most of the summer working on UFOs …..

I also spent some time contemplating what was important in my life. It seems top of the list is minimising the drama. I’m learning to take each day as it comes while getting rid of all the toxic stuff that piled up over the years. I suppose this could be considered my “What I did this Summer” report. It’s been a summer like no other I can remember in all of my 57 years on earth. This is going to sound really goofy but I spent the summer trying to find myself. Over the years I have been a daughter, a sister, a friend, a wife, a mother and now I have suddenly turned into a single parent! It’s not something I ever contemplated until earlier this year. Both Sarah and I are building new traditions and finding our way to a new life all the while making some fantastic new memories. Our friends and family have been and will be with us every step of the way no matter what life throws at us. If I haven’t thanked all those who have shown support along the way for your kind words, thoughts, actions and gifts I do it now. Thank you x

I have been Lucie the Happy Quilter for many years. I am just simply a happy person who tries to make the best of any and all situations. This time next year I will still be Lucie the Happy Quilter only new and hopefully improved with a lot less baggage. I will still be the creative soul that I have always been but hopefully brimming with even more inspiration to share with you. I’m so looking forward to Christmas and the turn of the year.
