Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve all had an enjoyable weekend. Here in the UK we are enjoying a bank holiday weekend. Tomorrow is the holiday. I’m hoping the sun shines as brightly tomorrow as it has today.
While the sun was shining brightly this morning I decided to do a couple of little jobs outside. I bought a few sacks of pea gravel that I wanted to spread around my gravel garden. It’s a job I dreaded but knew wouldn’t take more than a few minutes. The gravel garden looks fab again. Those few minutes spent tidying in the gravel garden has spurred me on to purchasing my annual plants this coming week. We’ve had a couple of mornings where we had frost last week. I’m hoping that the possibility of frost has past now so I can pretty up my garden.
I have a wee bit of sewing progress to show you today. I make quite a lot of lists in order to keep my life straight. So, I’ve always got a notebook/diary type thing which I consider my bible. As I have four weeks left in the current notebook I decided to set up the next one. So, I started the process by making a cover for said book …..
As you can see I kept it simple and straight forward. I used a few bits of brightly patterned/coloured fabric which I cut into strips and joined together and did some easy quilting. I kept it simple because that way I know I can cope with starting and finishing in one session.
Last weekend I started a project that I have been putting off for a few weeks. I always struggle choosing colours and prints for my projects. And as I was determined to use only what was in my stash I struggled even more. I finally settled on these fabrics which I will turn into a Bargello style quilt. It looks nothing at the moment but I think when it’s done it will look reasonably good. I was hoping to make progress on this project this weekend but something came up and I set the project aside until next weekend.
I got a message from my creative friend on Friday evening asking me if I could produce a quilt quickly for a poorly person who suffered a stroke a few days ago. Well I have been asked to step up to the plate a few times to produce quilts to give poorly people comfort in a time of need. I must admit that I wasn’t sure if I could do it. I got a brief which included using red and grey fabric and fleece backing. I wasn’t even sure that I would have enough of those colours to piece an entire quilt top. Well guess what???? I found sufficient of those colours to be able to piece a generous single size quilt including borders. The only thing missing was the fleece for backing. However, I knew exactly where to get that easily enough. I pulled the fabric and made a plan of action on Friday evening. And after stepping out to purchase red fleece I starting sewing the strips that I started cutting at 5am Saturday morning. By 5pm Saturday evening I had pieced the quilt top and loaded it into my longarm for quilting this morning. As I sit here this evening, Sunday evening, I have quilted and bound said quilt and it’s ready to handover on Wednesday. Here are a few photos of the quilt in question.
Although I wasn’t sure I could meet the challenge when I received the message on Friday evening, I felt it was important to get the job done. Someone needed the comfort a quilt brings. Once I determined I had enough fabric in my stash to do it I decided that this project would be a great way to pay forward the kindness I received over the past year since my divorce proceedings started. I’m so grateful for all the support and encouragement I received that piecing this quilt was a small price and a great way to pay all that kindness forward. One good turn always deserves another.
So, it’s been a rather busy but very productive weekend for me. I consider that I created something worthwhile. Longarm quilting using fleece as backing fabric is quite new to me. So, having another go gave me more experience and was a good learning curve. I have decided that while I didn’t use wadding in between the layers I did add a piece of calico to stabilise everything. I’m quite pleased with the result but most of all I am relieved that I managed to piece and quilt this project within 48 hours of receiving the request. I think I deserve a large refreshing Gin & Tonic this evening as a celebration of my accomplishment.
So, for this evening, this very happy and super ambitious quilt maker will be doing a little more work on the Patchwork of the Crosses. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something worthwhile. Until you read me again,
Happy stitching ♥ ♥
Yes, a VERY large G&T is in order – that’s a fabulous quilt!
Hi Lynne, I enjoyed my refreshingly large G&T this evening while working EPP elongated hexagons. Thanks for popping in today x
Lucie, you are one clever lady. Add to that your kindness for one in need of comfort a magnificent one too. I’m trying to get to grips with my 17 UFOs, and have scored four so far. So thank you again for introducing the topic and the idea. With good wishes, and cheers.
Hi Monica, I won’t take credit for 17 UFOs in 2017 challenge. And i’m afraid I haven’t progressed very much on my UFOs so far in 2017. I’m hoping to pick up the pace before the year is up though. Thank you for your very kind words x
Well, you have certainly had a busy weekend. That is a beautiful quilt. I am sure it will bring much comfort. Can’t wait to see how your bargello comes out. I have never attempted one of those.
Enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend.
Thanks for popping in today. I’m really glad you like my weekend project. I’m really looking forward to working on my Bargello style quilt soon x
You are my sewing angel…..This quilt apart from the comfort i KNOW it shows how Big your heart is.
Through the worst times in your life you have always found the time to give….With the stitches you sew…The tops you quilt…The fabric, supplies and money donated….The hours of time planning, teaching and helping “The Belles” grow. The many people who read this blog I think know how hard you work but I
Would like a big round of applause please ladies for the AMAZING Lucie .
I’m really curious now to find out how many of you are giving a standing ovation.
Love you Lucie xxx
Thank you Sandra. I think it’s very important to pay the support forward. It’s makes life run a little smoother when you know someone’s got your back x
well that quilt looks wonderful and I love the red fleece backing so warm and cuddly looking I also believe in ‘paying it forward’
I have used fleece on the back of a quilt but added wadding, like your idea much better so next time I think I also will add a softer fabric as a stabiliser.
have a wonderful day, thanks so much for your always interesting blogs

It’s lovely to hear from you Gayle. Paying it forward makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I consider myself very lucky to have met so many supportive people in my lifetime. So paying it forward is not a hardship. Thanks for popping in today Gayle x
Can you hear my clapping from Oz? Well said above.
Glad to see a post pop up & well done on such a speedy challenge. It looks lovely & hopefully helps on the long journey to recovery.
Looking forward to seeing the bargello come to life. I’m still stash busting too.
Have a great Bank Holiday week & take care.
Hi Susan, my weekend challenge was a great stashbuster. I used 15 different prints. I made lots of room in one drawer. Thank you for your very kind words x
Love the red and gray bricks quilt! I have never tried using fleece for a backing, does it quilt well?
Hi Bette, the fleece quilted up nicely. I had no tension problems or thread breaks.the fleece makes the quilt nice and cozy. Thanks for popping in Bette x
A massive well done and a pat on the back for being ‘up for it’. I’m sure the person receiving it will be very grateful for something so personal. I always think that I’ll get ahead and make a quilt ready in case a request comes in but I never do!
Hi Chris, thank you for your very kind words. I wish i was organised enough that I could have pulled a new quilt in the required colours from an inventory of fresh ready to handout quilts. Alas I’m afraid I’m not that organised. Still, what’s life without the odd challenge now and again??? Thanks for popping in today x
Standing ovation from me Lucie. That really is amazing todo that all in the time you did. You really are a lovely lady with a very big heart. See you soon.heather x
Thank you for your very kind words. Some challenges just have to be met. Bringing comfort to a stroke patient is rather important in my books. I look forward to catching up with you soon Heather. Thanks for popping in soon x
Hello Lucie!
I am so impressed with all of your accomplishments. And your “pay it forward” attitude is a good lesson for us all!
Thank you for sharing your day to day tidbits with us – you are inspiring me to tackle a few unfinished projects that have sat untouched for far too long. I am not completing them (or even getting much time to work on them) but the snatches of time I do get help to revive my sole. Thank you for the inspiration!

Hi Beth, thank you so much for your very kind words. I’m really please that I can inspire even one person to make a little progress on some ongoing projects. I find that every little bit of progress spurs us on to do a little more. If you’re looking for a little solace do some simple hand sewing. I find English Paper Piecing does it for me. It’s simple enough and can be picked up and put down. During difficult times or even buys times unwinding is very important, what better way to unwind that a little simple sewing. Thanks for popping in today Beth x
